BOTOX® Cosmetic
Wrinkle Relaxer
AVERAGE COST: $200 – $600
BOTOX® Cosmetic reduces wrinkles and lines, giving the skin an even appearance by an injection that temporarily relaxes the muscles beneath the skin.
BOTOX® Overview
BOTOX® Cosmetic is an anti-aging skin rejuvenation procedure at Mountcastle Medical Spa & Laser Center in Northern Virginia that treats facial wrinkles without surgery.
Made under the name Botulinum Toxin Type A, this FDA-approved agent works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions. When the targeted muscles can no longer contract as forcefully, the overlying skin smooths out, softening the wrinkles those muscle movements create. BOTOX® Cosmetic remains one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed in the United States each year. When done correctly and consistently by our highly trained injectors, BOTOX® Cosmetic can soften the fine lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows and alongside the forehead while preserving natural expression.
Botox injections at Mountcastle Medical Spa & Laser Center are performed by experienced aesthetic providers under the direction of Dr. Timothy Mountcastle, Double Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon. Patients across Ashburn, Leesburg, Sterling, Reston, and Northern Virginia trust our providers for safe, precise Botox treatments — including Meredith West, PA-C, recognized as Best Injector in the Best of Ashburn awards.
Administering BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered during an in-office appointment that typically takes about 15-30 minutes. The depth, length, quantity, and location of wrinkles vary for each patient. Therefore, the injection treatment, including the dosage and injection location, is tailored during the procedure. Patients will be marked for the specific areas on the face that are going to be treated. The injection is given through a syringe to localized areas on the face. Patients will feel a small prick as the needle inserts through the skin, but any pain or discomfort is controlled with a cold compress.

What to Expect
At Mountcastle Medical Spa and Laser Center, we strive to make your BOTOX® injections as quick as possible. After a plan has been devised during your initial consultation, the areas to be injected are cleaned with an alcohol swab. Accurate doses of the BOTOX® are carefully administered via a small needle and syringe. The entire process from initial consultation to the conclusion of the BOTOX® injections lasts approximately 15-20 minutes.
Immediately following a series of BOTOX® injections, there will be some mild swelling and redness at the injection site. This will subside a few hours after the procedure. Patients can resume their normal activities immediately.
Am I a Candidate for Botox?
Most healthy adults bothered by dynamic wrinkles — forehead lines, the “11s” between the brows, or crow’s feet — are good candidates for Botox. The most common age range for starting treatment is 30-55, though younger patients often use it preventively and older patients continue to benefit from it well beyond that range.
Botox is not recommended for patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have certain neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis, or have a known allergy to botulinum toxin or any of its components. Your injector will review your full medical history during your consultation to confirm candidacy.
Botox for men has also become increasingly common, particularly for softening forehead lines and frown lines while preserving a naturally strong brow. Our injectors tailor dosing differently for male patients, since men typically have stronger facial musculature than women.
How Much Does Botox Cost in Ashburn?
Botox cost depends on the number of units needed, which varies by treatment area and by patient. On average, patients invest between $200 and $600 per session. A general guide to units by area:
| Treatment Area | Typical Units | Typical Cost Range |
|---|---|---|
| Forehead lines | ||
| Glabella (“11s”) | ||
| Crow’s feet | ||
| Full face / combination | — |
Your exact cost will be confirmed during your consultation based on your goals and the number of units required. Ask about current happy hour Botox specials, and see our full injectables pricing guide for per-unit rates.
Results
Initial results from BOTOX typically appear within 3-5 days, with full results developing over about two weeks. Once results set in, patients will notice a smoother, softer appearance as targeted wrinkles relax. Results generally last three to four months, though this varies by patient.
Recovery & Aftercare
Botox recovery is minimal, but a few simple aftercare steps help ensure the best results:
- Avoid strenuous exercise for a few hours after treatment
- Keep your head elevated for the first 8-10 hours
- Avoid lying down flat or rubbing the treated area for at least 4 hours
- Expect any mild swelling or redness at injection sites to subside within a few hours

Risks & Side Effects
Botox is well-tolerated by most patients. Common, mild side effects include temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, and occasionally a mild headache — these typically resolve within a few days. Rare side effects can include eyelid or brow drooping (ptosis) or asymmetry, which is why choosing an experienced, medically trained injector matters. All Botox treatments at Mountcastle Medical Spa are performed under the direction of a double board-certified plastic surgeon to help minimize these risks.
Botox vs. Dysport, Daxxify & Xeomin
Botox is one of several FDA-approved neuromodulators, alongside Dysport, Daxxify, and Xeomin. They work in similar ways but differ in onset speed, longevity, and how they diffuse in the skin:
| Neuromodulator | Typical Onset | Typical Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Botox® | 3-5 days | 3-4 months | Most studied, precise for small areas like crow’s feet |
| Dysport® | 2-3 days | 3-4 months | Tends to diffuse slightly more, often favored for larger areas like the forehead |
| Daxxify® | 3-5 days | Up to 6 months | Newer, longer-lasting formulation |
| Xeomin® | 3-7 days | 3-4 months | “Naked” formula with no additive proteins |
Timelines above are general and can vary by patient.

Botox FAQ
Faq
-
BOTOX® Cosmetic is approved by the FDA and has a long, safe history. It is administered in over 75 countries and consistently ranks as the most popular cosmetic procedure in America. However, even with its popularity, BOTOX® Cosmetic is a drug and should only be administered by a qualified medical practitioner. Individuals who receive injections by someone inexperienced run the added risk of bruising, over-medicating, and ultimately, obtaining an undesirable result.
-
Yes. Dysport®, Daxxify®, and Xeomin® are FDA-approved alternatives that relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles and frown lines. Some practices lean towards BOTOX® Cosmetic to address forehead lines while considering Dysport® for crow’s feet. Each has its own advantages, which can be discussed during your consultation.
-
Injectable fillers such as Restylane®, JUVÉDERM®, and RHA® help decrease wrinkles by adding volume to certain facial structures, which creates the appearance of smooth skin. BOTOX® Cosmetic, which temporarily relaxes the underlying muscle, offers a similar result through a different approach. A skilled practitioner will be able to determine if a filler or a product like BOTOX® Cosmetic — or a combination of both — will garner the best results.
-
Individuals who wish to soften and decrease facial lines and wrinkles may be candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic. The most common age to receive BOTOX® Cosmetic injections is between 30-55. However, it is also common for patients younger and older to receive injections.
-
BOTOX® Cosmetic is not a permanent fix. Most patients experience results that last approximately three to four months, although individual results may vary. Regardless, many patients recognize even the temporary results are worth feeling and looking younger.
-
Initial improvement typically appears within three to five days, with full results developing within about two weeks.
-
Yes. When performed by experienced injectors, BOTOX® softens wrinkles while maintaining natural facial expression and movement. Our providers carefully evaluate facial anatomy and muscle movement to avoid an overdone or “frozen” look.
-
The number of units depends on the treatment area, the strength of the underlying muscles, and your goals. Forehead lines, the glabella (“11s”), and crow’s feet each typically require a different unit range. Your injector will recommend a specific number of units during your consultation.
-
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a cosmetic, elective treatment and is not typically covered by insurance. We offer financing options for qualified patients — ask our team for details during your consultation.
-
Most patients describe the sensation as a brief pinch or small prick rather than significant pain. A cold compress can be used before or after injections to minimize any discomfort, and the injections themselves take only a few minutes.
-
Yes. Many patients combine BOTOX® with dermal fillers, Sculptra, or Morpheus8 in the same visit for more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Your provider can recommend a combination treatment plan during your consultation.
